‘THE MEETING’ CYBER ESCAPE ROOM LAUNCHES IN JOHANNESBURG.

Guess who’s back, back again… no, not Eminem (although that Houdini track is pretty f*cking cool)… it’s US. We’re back. With a brand new Cyber Escape Room scenario called “The Meeting” which launched at Roosevelt High School in Johannesburg on 9th July.

This exciting new scenario is designed to highlight the importance of cyber security within the education and children’s services sectors specifically, an area often underserved by cyber security vendors.

So what’s this escape room all about? Well you can see our intro video here…

The launch event was strategically scheduled to coincide with the beginning of Term 3, a period often referred to as “silly season” due to the uptick in social media activity among teens. This timing was no accident; we wanted to ensure that the educators and faculty members at Roosevelt High School were well-prepared to guide their students through the potential cyber security pitfalls associated with increased online activity.

We were pleased to welcome nearly 100 members of staff and faculty to the event. The enthusiasm and engagement in the room was palpable, and the participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

“The Meeting” is a unique Cyber Escape Room scenario that immerses participants in a realistic and challenging environment, with a time-limit imposed to build the pressure and excitement. The plot revolves around the disappearance of a (fictional) teenager who we know has recently been speaking to someone new online.

Mimicking a real life scenario we hear of all too often, we discover that the teenager has taken her mobile phone with her so we’re left with the items in her school bag to help us uncover her whereabouts before it’s too late. And along the way, we’re taught valuable lessons about cyber security and privacy.

Key learning outcomes of “The Meeting” include:

  1. Dangers of Oversharing on Social Media: Participants learn how easily information shared online can be used against them and the importance of privacy settings.
  2. Cyber Stranger Danger: The scenario highlights the risks associated with interacting with strangers online and the importance of skepticism and caution.
  3. Creating Stronger Passwords: Attendees discover the significance of strong, unique passwords and the potential consequences of weak password practices.

The faculty and educators who attended the event found it not only educational but also highly engaging. The interactive nature of the escape room kept participants on their toes, making the learning process both dynamic and memorable. Here are some key takeaways from the event:

  • Fun and Engaging: Many attendees noted how enjoyable the experience was, which is crucial in ensuring that the lessons learned are retained and applied in real-world situations.
  • Eye-Opening Experience: The scenario shed light on the various cyber threats that both educators and students face daily. It provided practical insights into how to mitigate these risks effectively.
  • Reminder of Best Practices: The event served as a timely reminder for teachers and faculty about the importance of maintaining good cyber hygiene, especially regarding social media behavior and protecting personal information.

With the successful launch of “The Meeting” in Johannesburg, we are excited to roll out this new scenario to other schools and organisations around the globe. Our goal is to equip as many individuals as possible with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the digital world safely.
